The ANDY PAYTON column

SUPPORTING Burnley is a real roller-coaster ride at times.

And it's taught me a harsh lesson in recent weeks - never bet on the Clarets.

Every time I back the lads I end up losing money and, even though I hate betting against us, I did so at Leeds and again lined the bookie's pocket!

Against Ipswich, I was back on a home win and, like Steve and the lads, back on the losing side.

So tonight, I'm keeping the money in my own pocket and just going along to enjoy the night.

We've gained something of a reputation as a cup team in recent years so, despite the horrendous injury problems, why can't it be Burnley springing the surprises this season?

It seems that every year a team from outside the Premiership enjoys a run in one of the major competitions and there is no doubt Spurs will be on edge tonight.

Despite the attacking flair of Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe, they have been shipping goals for fun in recent weeks and they know the cameras are not at Turf Moor to record an easy win for the big boys.

Let's just hope the Clarets can repeat the Villa performance, although I'd lay odds not many fans are expecting that.

It must be hard for everyone who watches Burnley at the moment, not knowing what to expect from week to week.

The cup run is helping to keep spirits up, but the league position continues to worry most fans and Saturday's defeat again highlighted just how tight things are at the bottom.

Saturday's home game with Nottingham Forest now looks like the first genuine six-pointer of the season - a cliche I hate, but the only way to sum up games like this.

That seven-point cushion is nice and comfy at the moment, but you can't really see the likes of Nottingham Forest remaining in trouble - not with the likes of David Johnson and Gareth Taylor in the camp.

So while they are having a tough time of it, we need to make sure that continues and pick up another crucial three points to widen that gap further.

Finally, I feel I have to wish good luck to young Gary Cahill, who looks set for a scary baptism of fire tonight at the heart of the Burnley defence.

I have to admit, I know nothing about the Aston Villa teenager, but Steve Cotterill has been pretty canny in his wheeling and dealing so far so I don't have too many fears there.

I'm not sure Gary will be feeling the same though when he runs out to face two of the hottest strikers in the Premiership.

Best of luck kid!
