OBJECTORS to proposals for former mill reservoirs near Lowercroft gave notice of their opposition ahead of a planning meeting on Tuesday night.

Signs appeared along Lowercroft Road on Thursday urging councillors to turn down planning permission for new car parks and access roads.

The signs, fixed to posts along a grass verge, ask members of the planning control committee to 'protect our Green Belt' and 'reject developers' plans'.

Businessman Keith Talbot wants permission to open up the three Whiteheads lodges for fishing. He intends to install car parks with access roads for anglers, one on land south of Gisburn Drive and the other at Old Barn Farm, Ainsworth.

Mr Talbot says charges for recreational fishing are the only source of funding that can guarantee the future of the lodges.

However, objectors believe that any development of land around the lodges would open them up for future housebuilding.

Planners say the proposals should be refused because of inadequate access and the need to protect flora and fauna.

Gisburn Drive resident Pauline Price: 'We don't know who put the signs up, but it does show the level of resistance that there is to any form of development whatsoever in the Green Belt.'

Councillors will make their decision at the meeting, which takes place from 7pm in the Peel Room, Bury Town Hall.
