JAY Bothroyd has admitted he lost his head when he was sent off at Norwich on Saturday.
The Blackburn Rovers forward has apologised to his manager, team-mates and the supporters after his wild kick on Mattias Jonson in the first half of the Premiership battle between the bottom two clubs.
Rovers' 10 men then fell behind before Paul Dickov rescued a precious point with a late equaliser.
"I'd like to apologise to manager Mark Hughes, my team-mates and the fans for getting sent off," said Bothroyd.
"I'm fully aware I've disappointed a lot of people and can't express how sorry I am. I lost my head in a moment of madness and as soon as it happened I couldn't believe what I'd done. He'd been kicking me and getting under my skin but that's no excuse.
"I acted completely unprofessionally and deserved to get my marching orders.
"It was awful walking off. You could see by the faces of my team-mates and the fans that I'd let them all down."
Bothroyd, who earned a bad boy reputation at previous clubs Arsenal and Coventry City, also revealed he intends to learn the lessons from his dismissal.
It means he will miss the next three Premiership matches after looking like a rejuvenated figure when he scored against Liverpool a week earlier.
Bothroyd added: "You have to live and learn by your mistakes and that's what I intend to do."
