BURNLEY MP Peter Pike has called for the drink-drive limit to be lowered and random roadside breath testing to cut road deaths.
The Burnley Labour backbencher made his call following after a survey by national road safety campaign group, BRAKE, revealed the horror of young drivers' behaviour on Lancashire roads and throughout the country.
The survey, published as part of Road Safety Week reveals that a quarter of young drivers still at school or college actually admit to drink-driving.
Drink-drive casualties are rising and a new generation of drink-drivers are being identified as a significant cause for this rise.
Mr Pike said today: "These findings are shocking and sadly provide further evidence that young drinking is on an increase, together with an increase in the numbers of those who are willing to then get behind the wheel of a car.
"I support the calls to give the police more powers to enable them to carry out random and targeted roadside drink-drive testing, particularly at pub/club kicking out time. I accept that we need more traffic police to carry these tests out and police our roads at night."
