A SINGLE mum from Darwen has been honoured for her selfless dedication in a national award scheme.

Tracey Paterson, 33, of Marsh House Lane, was chosen from hundreds of people across Lancashire in the 'Tower of Strength' campaign by Blackpool Tower. She was nominated by best friend Sharon Nunez for her strength and determination in holding down a night job while caring for three children during the day.

For 10 years, Tracey has worked two nights a week at Thorncliffe nursing home in Darwen. Once home, she cares for her daughters Chloe, 10, and Lydia, 3, and Sharon's three-year-old son Fidelif - often going 48 hours without sleep.

Despite pains in her leg and foot as a result of suffering polio as a child, she never complains.

Sharon, 37, said: "I'm really proud of her for getting this far and want to thank her for everything she does for me. She's a single mother but she hasn't given up. She has always been there for my son and I. Despite her own troubles, she is our tower of strength."

Tracey was chosen as Lancashire finalist in the nationwide competition and given family tickets to the Tower and circus, Sea Life Centre and Louis Tussauds Waxworks.

She said she is embarrassed, but secretly pleased and proud. "When I first heard about it I was shocked. I thought 'I'll kill Sharon!' But now I'm really pleased and glad she nominated me."

Tracey will now compete against regional winners across the UK. The winner, to be announced on November 17, will be invited to the Tower for an all-expenses paid weekend in December and will be given tickets to watch the live televised final of the TV show 'Strictly Come Dancing'.
