MORE than 150 hikers took to the hills in the Forest of Bowland for the British Heart Foundation's Heart of the Kingdom challenge.

The sponsored challenge route included the very heart of the United Kingdom - Whitendale Hanging Stones - and incorporated previously 'uncharted territory' recently opened as part of the Government's 'Right to Roam' legislation.

The charity's regional events organiser Deborah Simpson said: "This was the first Heart of the Kingdom Challenge and we are really thrilled with the number of people who came along to take part.

"We are so grateful to all our supporters for the money that they raise to help us fight heart disease in the region."

The event was supported by United Utilities, the Duchy of Lancaster and The Forest of Bowland, which administers the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Stewards were on hand to man water and soup stops en route with the Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Team available throughout the day to help marshal the event and keep a watchful eye on walkers.
