SPREADING some Christmas cheer this year are the pupils at Higher Lane Primary School in Whitefield.

The juniors and infants classes held two harvest festivals at the Egerton Road School to fill shoeboxes for disadvantaged children across eastern Europe.

The 150 boxes were packed full of gifts for young children, teenagers and household items, including colouring books, gloves and shampoo, and the school even had to send some extra bags after they ran out of boxes.

The presents will be used by the Rotary Shoebox Scheme, which started in 1994 when gifts were sent to children in Romania at Christmas. Since then, the scheme has continued to grow and now thousands of boxes are sent to children and families across Eastern Europe.
