RESIDENTS in a busy Preston street are calling for a 20mph speed limit to be imposed.

It comes after a consultation, started last week, into making the Holme Slack estate into a 20mph zone with traffic calming measures such as speed humps.

However, part of Holme Slack Lane, which resident's say is a rat run and the busiest road in the estate, is proposed to remain at 30 mph.

The stretch of road is used by the number 14 Preston Bus service, and bosses at the company say the traffic humps that would have to be installed as part of the scheme, would damage the buses and endanger bus passengers.

A petition has been handed to traffic chiefs at Preston Town Hall, but a final decision will not be made until the consultation period ends on November 30.

Sub postmaster of Holme Slack post office, Raj Chauhan, signed the petition and is supporting the campaign. He said: "The traffic is horrendous on the lane. Many times we have thought somebody was going to get hurt.

Grandmother-of-six Nancy Gore, also of Holme Slack Lane, added: "My grandchildren come here, but I don't let them play in the front garden because of the traffic.

"Something has to be done to slow the traffic down, it's a rat run."

Ward councillor Terry Cartwright added: "We are pleased the rest of Holme Slack is going to be made a 20 mile an hour zone, but this is the most dangerous road and also needs to have a 20 mile an hour speed limit."

Peter Bell, director of Preston Bus, said: "We are all for having that road 20 miles an hour, but it's the speed humps that come with it that we have a problem with.

"It will damage our vehicles and people on the buses will get hurt."

He added that if speed humps and the 20mph zone were introduced the bus service along the road might have to be scraped.
