A DISABLED man who only learned how to swim three years ago is about to complete the equivalent of crossing the English Channel - all in aid of charity.
Roy Walker decided to take the plunge in aid of 'Aspire', which raises funds for people with spinal injuries, and will complete his 22-mile marathon at Heysham pool on Sunday.
"I couldn't swim but when I developed arthritis in my spine the consultant said swimming would be good for me," says the Morecambe man. "I started to learn and now I try and go five times a week and swim 40 lengths each visit.
"Next time go I will have completed the 22-miles."
He has been sponsored by staff and fellow swimmers at Heysham for his swimathon.
