A PETITION calling for a ban on heavy lorries using the A6 south of Lancaster has been handed to Lancashire County Council.
The petition - with more than 300 signatures - has been collected by Lancaster and District Green Party.
It calls for the county to end the blight on Galgate, Scotforth, Greaves and Lancaster city centre caused by lorries headed through the city to Morecambe and the port at Heysham.
Green city councillor Chris Coates says: " Residents in these areas have suffered years of noise, disturbed sleep, damaged roads and the danger of these vehicles passing through.
"How much longer do we have to wait for the County to sort this problem out?"
The Green plan is that heavy lorries should be prohibited from South Road, between the Pointer Roundabout and the one-way-system in Lancaster centre.
It could be enforced by using fixed cameras and would be both cost effective and enforceable - while leaving local deliveries to South Lancaster unaffected.
Cllr Coates says: "Now that pro-posals for a Western by-pass have finally been abandoned it is time to ensure that all lorries bound for central Lancaster, Morecambe, Heysham and the port use junction 34 of the M6 instead of junction 33.
"This would remove the blight of heavy vehicles from south Lancaster and bring relief to residents along the A6."
