I HAVE been reading about Lancaster City Council's plans to cut funding to a variety of yearly events.
In particular I was shocked to see that funding is being withdrawn from the Maritime Festival that is held every Easter.
Since Lancaster is a port city and has heritage linked to the sea I would have thought that this kind of heritage orientated festival would be supported by our local council.
It brings singers and musicians from all of the UK and western Europe to our city and is widely known as a favourite within the maritime community. I and many other local people are very fond of this festival and hugely enjoy the community spirit and music.
It brings tourism and money to the town over the Easter weekend and promotes heritage learning while everyone enjoys themselves - so why does Lancaster City Council no longer support it?
Surely this kind of festival can only be good for our city. One of the reasons that I settled in Lancaster was that it was a historical town with character. Don't take this away from us!
