PETE Jagger has an extra incentive to get to the finish of this month's Lombard Revival Rally - every mile he completes will raise money for the BBC Children In Need appeal.
Following a 20-year break from motorsport, the Colne pet shop owner is making his comeback on the three-day endurance event, which re-traces the route of the classic Lombard RAC Rally.
Jagger, 48, will be partnered by 16-year-old schoolboy Sebastian Marshall, from Crosshills, at the wheel of their distinctive Peugeot 205, specially bought and prepared for the unique event.
"It's been a long time since I competed as a road rally navigator, but the Revival Rally really got me thinking about having a go again," explained Jagger, who owns Stell's Pet Store in Dockray Street.
"Like a lot of older enthusiasts, I remember the halcyon days of British rallying and the Revival aims to re-create the same atmosphere by using many of the same stages used back in the 1970's and 80's.
"But the organisers were very clever is making it open only to under-1400cc cars, which means that anyone on a small budget can take part.
"We've bought the car specially, and had been thinking about raising money for charity.
"When we saw the colour our minds were made up - it was the same yellow as Pudsey Bear!
"I think Seb will have a great time. His dad and I are good friends and although it's his first ever rally, he's very bright and very switched-on about rally navigation.
"I don't think we'll win, not with Gwyndaf Evans and Anthony Reid in the line-up, but Seb's got his eye on the under-21 award."
A capacity entry of 115 cars and crews - including 28 veterans of the original Lombard RAC - will set off from York on November 25.
En route to the finish in Cheltenham three days later, the field will tackle 50 timed sections at 40 venues.
The opening day includes a daunting night section in the notorious Kielder Forest, before going onto Wales.
To keep the costs down, service vehicles have been banned and the only spares allowed are the ones carried in the car.
"Our target is get to the finish, so we'll have to drive accordingly," explained Jagger.
"There's no point in going flat out, because you'll just end up going off.
"The only extra tyres we'll have will be the two in the boot, so in effect we've got to make six tyres last three days.
"But we'll have some fun and hopefully raise a decent amount.
"We've got a target of between £1500 and £2000 and already have sponsorship from two Blackburn companies, Paul Graham Photographic and Aquamania Pet Superstore. However any more donations would be very welcome!"
