CROOKS stole £20,000 of beef from outside a Great Harwood butchers. Thieves hooked up the £16,000 refrigerated trailer to their car and made off from outside E Slinger and Sons butchers. Police believed the thieves were stealing to order.
Former Hyndburn councillor and ex-mayor Alan Lund died. Mr Lund, a Liberal Democrat councillor, represented the Baxenden ward for 15 years.

A COLNE woman was set to fly halfway around the world to see her sister for the first time in 33 years. Ada Birch was due to take her husband Vincent to Australia to meet her sister Ida to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. The couple, of Slater Avenue, saved for two years for the six-week trip of a lifetime. Ida emigrated to Australia after the war.

A BURNLEY greengrocer was accused of obtaining 3,600 eggs by false pretences. The man, who ran a store in Accrington Road, was remanded in custody for one week while magistrates considered the case.
The court heard how 10 cases of eggs worth more than £80 were delivered to the store on credit. When the delivery man returned at the pre-arranged date for payment he found the shop closed and a note on the door which read "I'm out hawking".
