SHAKERS' jubilation at reaching the FA Cup second round has been tempered by what could be a serious injury to influential captain, Dave Challinor.

Challinor was taken off as Shakers completed a 5-2 win over Vauxhall Motors on Saturday and concerned manager, Graham Barrow, said: "He is at the hospital as we speak undergoing a scan, and first indications are he has damaged his medial ligament.

"If that's the case we could be without him for anything up to six weeks, which to be honest I would take now, I just hope it is not a season long lay-off.

"To be fair we are pretty well covered in the centre of defence, with Paul Scott and Matty Barrass, who can play sweeper.

"But I would like get Challi back by the New Year.

"It is always the worst scenario when someone goes down with no-one near them, and when you consider the type of lad he is - a seasoned, tough pro - he screamed in pain when hit happened, which doesn't sound too good.

"He was just about to make a turn when he probably caught his studs in the turf and twisted badly.

"It really took the enjoyment out of the performance and result.

"Not only is he important to us at the back, he is also the leader on the pitch.

"As far as that is concerned I think Colin Woodthorpe will probably take over as captain, hes been playing superbly recently and he has the experience."

Despite his concern for his skipper's well being, he still managed to appreciate the victory.

"The five goals capped a very clinical, professional performance," he said.

"We treated them with the utmost respect.

"I watched them, Kelham watched them, John Forrest watched them.

"Considering we only had two weeks in between the draw being made and facing them, we did everything we could to prepare for them, and it paid off.

"To be fair to them, their heads never went down and they stuck to their task scoring two goals, and they would have punished us if we had given them the opportunity.

"But we went through in style and we had scoring contributions from right through the team, with Challi and Wayne Mattis stepping up to as well as Nugent.

"I just hope we can carry it through to Saturday's home game against Notts County."

Determined to keep everyone's feet firmly on the ground, he added: "As good as the both the performance and result were, we can't afford to get carried away, we have to keep this result in perspective.

"Unlike most teams around us we cant go out and add to the original squad, it is hard enough bringing in players to cover for injuries.

"But I'll be putting it forward again at today (Tuesday)'s board meeting that we need to bring in one or two faces to ensure we keep improving, rather than staying at our current level of performance.

"We need to be able to change things around, we need options,

"The frustrating thing is when we have had them, in the shape of Graeme Jones, he has been injured, so in effect our attacking options have been very restricted for the past couple of months."
