A PLAQUE marking the extraordinary life of one of Clitheroe's greatest sons has been officially unveiled.
The blue plaque in honour of Captain James King has been fixed to the King Street side of the Yorkshire Bank and was unveiled by a curator from the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum, near Middlesbrough.
Captain King, who was born in a house on the site of the bank in 1750, was second in command to James Cook and commanded HMS Discovery after the famous explorer was killed. King, a former Clitheroe Royal Grammar School pupil, went on to fight alongside Horatio Nelson.
Yesterday marked the 220th anniversary of Captain King's death and fellow Clitheroe school oldboy Steve Ragnall organised the ceremony and welcomed a distant relative of James King - great, great nephew Andreas King, from London.
Mr Ragnall, who also put up a display about Captain King in the town hall, said: "The ceremony was a double success because the Birthplace Museum has now asked to take my exhibit on King next year."
