HEYSHAM Atoms returned to winning ways on Saturday with a comprehensive 34-22 defeat of Leigh East at Trimpell - and a move up to third place in the league table.
Coach Dave Crow asked for increased commitment and desire from his men prior to the game and that was just what he got as the locals twice hit back from behind to take the points.
Welcoming back Russell Birkett after a two week break, the pack moved with a fluency not seen for some time to dominate in both attack and defence.
Leigh took the lead against the run of play but it wasn't long before a set move released Liam Hall through the middle for a real prop forward's try.
Matt Craven made big yards for the Atoms with weaving runs from defence, but once again Atoms struggled to register points.
It was only when Leigh scored again with a classy long range try that Atoms found their true form and hit back immediately as man-of-the-match Dave McVernon crossed the whitewash.
And from that moment on it was virtual one-way traffic as further tries were posted by Birkett (2), Andy Garnett and Gavin Winder.
Atoms are now handily placed just behind the league leaders - but with two games in hand which can elevate them to pole position if won.
