WHAT a sad state of affairs after five years of casino promises. Our Labour MP is still only 'exploring' the possibility of a 'voluntary' contribution of casino slot machine profits for local projects.

Over two years ago a survey clearly indicated 80 per cent of local residents were against the casino proposals unless a 'compulsory' levy on their profits went to local community projects.

Even the most pro casino hoteliers demanded each casino pay £1 million in advance for permission to set up in Blackpool.

Gordon Marsden MP is at risk of losing what little credibility he has on casino issues, by accusing Cllr Steven Bate of ranting.

I have found Cllr Bate a most determined but level-headed local person, positive in the future potential of Blackpool.

So long as it is not socially damaged by thousands of residents becoming slot junkies. Cllr Bate has, at every opportunity, tried to get the council leaders to discuss the alternatives that hotelier Mr Chappell suggested in recent letters. A Snow Dome ski facility, an Eden Centre type attraction, a large Universal Studios type indoor theme park but, most urgently, a very large entertainment, exhibition and conference facility.

Sadly, both Blackpool MPs have backed the council leaders in refusing to even allow discussion of any of those option.

Perhaps that would spoil their five-year spin and negative hysteria that there was no alternative to Vegas slot machines?

This week we expect the Government to admit that mega-casinos could cause more problems than they solve.

Both our Labour MPs must press for a local referendum to let the people decide.
