Sedgley Park U17 14 Widnes U17 17: IT was a shame that two of the better sides should meet at such an early stage in the competition.
As in a game that would have been worthy of the final, Widnes snatched the victory with a late try.
Sedgleys pack dominated possession, depriving the sharp looking Widnes backs of the ball.
The visitors then managed to take the lead with a penalty try early in the first half, but Sedgley came back strongly with a try.
The Widnes pack was under pressure, having two players sin-binned for killing the ball, and Park took the lead through a drop-goal and penalty goal.
With the score at 14-10 and time running out, three times Sedgley failed to clear their lines and paid the price when a Widnes forward crashed over from a tap-penalty.
