PRESTWICH councillors have welcomed a new safety scheme for Meade Hill Road.
Bury Council highlighted the road as having a poor accident record and suggested the scheme would help reduce the number of casualties.
Over a three year period, from 2000 to 2002, the road had been the scene of eight road accidents resulting in nine casualties. Half of those occurred at the end of Meade Hill Road at its junction with Sheepfoot Lane, and one involved a 63-year-old male cyclist.
The traffic management and road safety department of Bury Council delivered consultation packages to 94 properties in Meade Hill Road and they received 37 responses.
Of those, 78 per cent said they were supportive of the scheme and 19 per cent were against the measures.
The scheme will include new and enhanced surfacing for Meade Hill Road, additional warning signs, hatching along the road to separate out traffic, a mini roundabout at the junction of Meade Hill Road and Windsor Road and pedestrian refuges near the mini roundabout and at the junction of Sheepfoot Lane.
Speaking at Prestwich Area Board, Coun Andrew Garner said: "I cant tell you how pleased we are that this has been brought up and is going ahead."
Coun Gill Campbell added: "We have been campaigning for this for years."
