EAST Lancashire MP Gordon Prentice wants councils to be given new powers to get abandoned cars off the roads.
He fears the vehicles, which are often vandalised, could be a danger to children.
The Pendle Labour backbencher said: "Latest figures show more than 200,000 cars were left to rot on roadsides in the UK last year, some being there for months as councils waited to be able to move them.
"I want powers for councils so these abandoned cars can be removed quickly before they become wrecks and a blight on our environment.
"I know many people are concerned and I have been approached by constituents about cars left in the streets without tax. These are often the target of children - and can, of course, be a very dangerous playground.
"I want to see the council and police given powers to remove abandoned vehicles as quickly as possible.
"If the owner wishes to claim their vehicle back, they can contact the council to do so."
