A PARTY-GOER who attacked a fellow guest was defending himself but went over the top, a court heard
Ian Thomas, 46, who left victim Patrick Ferguson covered in blood, was given a two-year community rehabilitation order.
Thomas, of Holden Mill Caravan Site, Grane Road, Haslingden, had earlier admitted assault causing actual bodily harm, at Burnley Crown Court.
John O'Shea, prosecuting, told the court the defendant and Mr Ferguson had had a disagreement at the gathering, held at the Great Harwood home of Thomas's partner's mother.
Mr Ferguson felt a blow to the left side of his face and was knocked to the floor.
He tried to protect himself and although there were a number of blows he had no further recollection.
The victim suffered a laceration to his forehead and a swollen and bruised eye.
Charles Brown, for Thomas, said although he had a history of offending, there had been a significant gap in his record.
He added that community rehabilitation would be appropriate.
