TRAFFORD 1 BACUP BORO 0

FORMER Manchester United, Aberdeen and Huddersfield midfielder Ben Thornley has joined Brent Peters' revolution at Bacup Borough.

The Bacup boss had been tracking the former Old Trafford fledgling for a number of weeks and finally secured his signature ahead of their weekend clash with Trafford.

It's another major coup for the ambitious West View chief, who already has former United player David May in his ranks.

And Peters is delighted to have the 29-year-old on board after he quit Coca Cola League One side Chesterfield to aid Bacup's North West Counties Division One title push.

"This is yet another quality signing," Peters said.

"Chesterfield wanted to keep him but, as with a lot of the lower division Football League clubs, they were reluctant to give him a new contract and Ben wanted more than that.

"He has joined us to put himself into the shop window to hopefully get back into the Football League

"At 29 the lad has got a lot to offer, his quality, experience and professionalism will be a big plus for us."

However, Thornley cannot make his debut until he has recovered from a calf injury.

And Peters cannot wait to unleash him on the North West Counties League.

"He is a player that we desperately needed to give Lee Wilkinson the quality service to get goals," he said.

"Ben can't wait to get going and I am sure our supporters can't wait to watch him."

The news came as a massive boost for Bacup on a disappointing weekend on the pitch.

After carving out the best chances, Peters' side conceded a late goal to lose 1-0 at Trafford.

Phil Power, Lee Buggie, Nicky Taylor and Karl Stanley all had good chances to get on the scoresheet, with Stanley being denied by the post.

But they were left to rue their misses when Trafford struck in the 87th minute.
