A POLICE officer was assaulted after an uninvited guest appeared at the Bolholt Hotel in Bury, a court heard.

Bury magistrates were told how Michael Baker, a 22-year-old welder, caused a commotion at the hotel on Walshaw Road where his girlfriend, teaching support assistant Amber Unsworth, was on a training course.

Baker, from Burnley, admitted charges of behaviour likely to cause fear of violence, damaging a picture frame belonging to The Bolholt, and assaulting an officer in the execution of his duty.

Mr Ian Walsh, prosecuting, said the defendant travelled down from Burnley and became involved in a heated altercation with Miss Unsworth during which Baker screamed obscenities at her in her room.

Her colleagues described Baker as being in a "raging temper" and feared for Miss Unsworth's and their own safety.

Four police officers arrived and found Baker in an agitated state outside the hotel. He was told to calm down but instead he challenged the officers and lunged at one, grabbing him. There was a struggle and he was

detained. The officer suffered a sore windpipe and reddening to his neck.

Baker admitted it had been a case of the "green-eyed monster" because he thought his girlfriend, who was the mother of his child, had gone to Bury on a "jolly." He was relieved to find what his girlfriend had told him about the training course was right.

However, she was less than happy that he had turned up to check on her. An argument ensued but he had never attacked his girlfriend.

He said he would be making no excuses for his behaviour whatsoever and wished to make an unreserved apology to all concerned.

The case was adjourned for reports and Baker, who was granted bail, will return to court

for sentencing on December 9.
