THE headteacher of a high school has criticised the education league tables for not telling the full story about schools.

Speaking at an awards evening at Moorhead High School, Accrington, Andrew Bateman added that people were looking wider than the league tables.

Addressing parents, governors, staff, pupils and invited guests, including Mayor of Hyndburn Coun Miles Parkinson, he said: "Each year focus is made of some aspects of performance, but not of all and this to me seems so unfair. Fortunately the education community in Hyndburn looks wider than simple statistics when viewing the success of schools and particularly of Moorhead.

"Our local community knows that a lot of positive things happen in our school, both in lessons and in extra=curricular activities.

"There is a great deal of confidence in what is happening at Moorhead."

Mr Bateman went on to thank staff and governors for their hard work and he also praised the members of the Friends of Moorhead who had raised vital funds for the school and helped to get more people involved in school life.

He said: "Next year I am confident that we will again be able to report continued improvement in all aspects of school life - improvements brought about by the determination and efforts of all members of the wider school community."
