TWO quality second-half goals for the Magpies lit up an otherwise untidy UniBond League Challenge Cup second round tie.

Chorley ultimately proved too good for a very poor Mossley team.

The visitors were the last side beaten by Chorley five weeks ago and, though they forced the pace for much of the first half, they rarely threatened to score.

After a dreadful opening half, the proceedings could only improve and did so in style on 57 minutes.

From debutant Paul Postararo's perfect through pass David Eatock took the ball round ex-Magpie keeper Lee Bracey before easily slotting home his tenth goal of the season.

It gave the Magpies the confidence to settle down and play some neat football, the only scare a ferocious volley from the edge of the box by Rory Patterson which whistled just over the bar.

Mossley's square-lying defence was breached again on 84 minutes.

This time Nev Nelson supplied the defence-splitting ball for Daniel Douglas-Pringle to race onto and expertly lob the advancing Bracey.

Mossley did pull one back a minute from time when former Bacup player Rhodri Giggs squeezed a shot past John Gillies at the back post from an excellent left-wing centre.

However, Chorley comfortably held on for a morale-boosting victory.

Manager John Hughes completed an excellent signing after the match, recruiting powerful central defender Jamie Squires, one of several players recently released by Bamber Bridge in a cost-cutting exercise.
