THIRTY-FIVE roads in Padiham look set to have a 20mph speed limit introduced early next year to curb motorists endangering the lives of residents.
And, in a bid to further reduce the dangers, speed humps will also be installed.
Following complaints from residents about speeding cars, Lancashire County Council announced in July they intended to introduce traffic calming measures around the Thompson Street area of the town.
A consultation period advertising the new speed limit started last Friday and signs have been put up on the roads informing people of the proposals.
Providing there are no objections before the deadline of December 17 the new limit will be introduced in the new year.
A spokeswoman for Lancashire County Council, whose engineering services will carry out the work, said residents welcomed speed humps when consulted about them.
She said: "This legal process is for the 20mph speed limit. We have already consulted residents about traffic calming measures and they have been approved."
The project will cost £30,000 and other roads affected include Hill Street, Dryden Street, Levant Street, Abingdon Road, Barley Street, and Wheat Street.
In January 83-year-old Parker Ince was hit by a car and killed when walking his dog in Dryden Street. Dryden Street resident Debra Shirtcliffe said: "The road is full of cars and it is dangerous to cross."
