A POWERFUL and fascinating new play portraying the turbulent life of poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, the 'voice of the Russian revolution', comes to the Marsden Theatre, Worden Park, Leyland, on Saturday, November 27, at 7.30pm.
A Cloud in Trousers, by Steve Trafford, is the story of Mayakovsky's life observed through his extraordinary relationship with activist couple Lili and Osip Brik which acted as the catalyst for some of his most famous work.
Futurist poet Mayakovsky and the Briks are an impassioned and troubled mnage trois. Out on the streets, 300 million people are changing the world in the Russian revolution. Inside their Moscow apartment, these three are trying to change themselves, living out the revolutionary ideal of free love, without possessiveness or jealousy.
Celebrated as the greatest Russian poet of the twentieth century, Mayakovsky's legacy reaches far beyond the country's borders. Travel anywhere in Eastern Europe and you will find his name adorning street signs in many major cities where he is as renowned a literary figure as Shakespeare. A Cloud in Trousers is a tragicomedy of sex, poetry, politics and love, and one not to be missed.
