REGARDING the article on the funding crisis facing Lancashire Constabulary (LET, November 22) the enforcement of law and order is currently a burning issue in this country.
David Blunkett is proposing a whole new raft of legislation to combat crime and disorder which will make even more massive demands on police resources but he is obviously not prepared to provide the funding for the already heavy demands on police budgets.
It is time that taxpayers' money was allocated to the essentials such as police forces and not frittered away on white elephants like the "Dome" and other idiotic causes of which there are numerous examples.
Can I also suggest that extra funds for law and order be raised by charging a levy on all those brought before the courts and fined or imprisoned.
The levy, I suggest, should be on a sliding scale according to the amount of police resources consumed in the arrest and investigation procedures. This would relieve to some extent the demands on both the income tax payer and the council taxpayer.
