A CAMPAIGN to help cut the number of children injured on Burnley's roads is to be kicked off this weekend with the help of Pudsey Bear.

The Children in Need mascot will be lending his support to road safety when he visits Asda's Burnley store tomorrow.

Lancashire County Council's Road Safety Group will be holding an exhibition in the store to raise road safety awareness.

Pudsey will be in store wearing a high-visibility jacket in an effort to remind children to 'Be Safe, Be Seen'.

Along with Pudsey, road safety staff will be offering advice and giving out reflective and fluorescent hedgehog stickers to help children be seen more clearly by other road users.

In 2003, there were five children killed or seriously injured, and 39 slight injuries, in Burnley in the 4-11 age group.

This compares to 12 children killed or seriously injured, and 50 slight injuries, in the previous year.

Clare Farrer, principal road safety adviser, said: "Children sometimes forget that if they can see a car, it can't always see them, so we want to remind them to make sure they wear something fluorescent or reflective so they are visible to other road users."

The Road Safety Group will be giving advice, activity packs and reflective and fluorescent hedgehog stickers to parents and children in support of the 'Be Safe, Be Seen' campaign between 10am and 4pm.
