PNE were desperately unlucky to lose despite having 90 per cent of the play.
They had started brightly, with plenty of movement and passing in midfield. Louise Cafferkey was unlucky with a free kick on 10 minutes which forced a good save from the United keeper.
PNE dominated the first half, but couldn't find the killer ball to open the scoring.
Cafferkey hit the bar on 54 minutes and two minutes later, United took the lead, courtesy of an own goal.
PNE continued to outplay United, and Mel Martin and Michaela Barlow both went close. United had their only shot on target saved superbly by Karen Browne .
PNE kept piling on the pressure, but just didn't get the run of the ball in the final third of the pitch, and Sam Cadwallader went inches wide on 83 mins, and again a minute later.
PNEWFC are at home to Chester on Sunday.
Final score: PNE WFC 0 Manchester United 1
