A MAN who racially abused the owner of a Chinese takeaway did not think he was being racist because both he and his victim were Asian.
But a court heard that Yasvinter Ram's racist rantings were wasted on his victim - because he did not speak English.
Blackburn Magistrates heard a member of staff understood enough of the language to recognise repeated use of the 'F' word and police were called.
When they spoke to Ram he replied "Stupid Chinese, they should be able to speak English."
He later said that he did not think he was being racist because they were both Asian.
Ram, 33, of Bolton Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to racially aggravated threatening behaviour and possessing a lock knife in a public place. He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £100 compensation and £50 costs.
Scott Ainge, prosecuting, said a Miss Dun was working in the takeaway when her boss, Mr Chen came in followed by Ram. "There was some concern by Ram about Mr Chen's driving," said Mr Ainge. Police moved Ram on but he returned two hours later and began shouting and swearing at Mr Chen.
