THE Mayor of Burnley received a pleasant surprise when a group of firefighters paid her a home visit.
Members of Green Watch from Burnley Fire Station visited Councillor Margaret Lishman at her home in Halifax Road, Briercliffe.
The visit was part of the fire service's free home safety checks which anyone across the borough can request. Firefighters carry out a fire assessment, give advice on fire prevention, escape routes in case of a fire and fit free smoke alarms.
A safety check was also carried out at the home of the Mayoress Anne Kelly who lives just a few doors away from Coun Lishman.
Coun Lishman said it was nice to be visited by a group of firefighters but said everyone should take up the offer a safety check.
She said: "Everybody ought to be contacting the fire service because you get lots of advice on how help prevent fires and stop yourself being injured if there was a fire.
"People should not knock a gift horse in the mouth."
