TWO men have been charged with racist chanting at Burnley's match against Millwall on Saturday.
The pair are due to appear in court next week after being charged following incidents alleged to have taken place during Burnley's 1-0 Championship victory at Turf Moor.
Police said Kenneth Morrow, 27, of Brennand Street, and Michael Grundy, 27, of Lyndsay Street, both Burnley, were arrested after allegedly making monkey noises towards mixed race Millwall player Paul Ifill.
They were arrested after the match and charged yesterday. They are due to appear at Burnley magistrates on December 8.
The man in charge of policing at Saturday's game, match commander Insp Jeff Brown, today said: "There is no room for racism in Burnley - and that includes at local football matches.
"Tough action will be taken against anyone caught singing racist chants or using racist language. We have made arrests in the past and will continue to do so."
Alex Wood, ground safety officer at Burnley FC, said: "Burnley Football Club is committed to stamping out racism and we are working in close partnership with the police to do that."
The arrests follow the unconnected case of two men at Blackburn Rovers' recent match against Birmingham City when former Rovers player Dwight Yorke was abused.
One of the two men accused, 22-year-old Jason Perryman from Chorley, pleaded guilty and was fined £1,000, banned from attending matches for five years and apologised to the player.
A second individual, David Ashcroft, 21 of Leyland, denied committing a racially aggravated public disorder offence and was bailed until this week.
Racism at football grounds returned to the spotlight after black players Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Jermaine Jenas and Jermaine Defoe were racially abused during last month's England friendly against Spain in Madrid.
