MORECAMBE'S Quicksand Arts Group is ready to paint the town red after securing the lease on a Grade II listed building in Morecambe.
The visual arts organisation, which exists to support local artists and craftspeople, received a £2,000 grant to enable it to set up the studio on Deansgate.
The deal comes as a major boost for the group, which suffered a setback earlier this year when it lost its West Street Studio premises after the owner sold up.
Founder member Jane And-erson says: "We are pleased with this latest achievement and proud to be taking an active part in the regeneration of the Morecambe area.
"We strongly believe there is a need for a base for the visual arts in Morecambe. The Tern Project has been successful in bringing art to the fore, but while there are lots of opportunities around for local musicians, there seems to be a real lack of facilities for resident artists.
The centre is to be used as a 'base for community arts events', with a gallery on the ground floor, studio space and rooms to be hired out for arts and craft classes and community workshops.
The group plans to make improvements to the front of the building and are applying for more funds to ensure the studio's continuing success.
Among the events planned is an open exhibition for local artists who will be able to book space in the gallery to display their work.
An open day is also in the pipeline, with a display of members' work and taster sessions for classes.
