YOUNGSTERS in a deprived area of Darwen could be kept off the streets and out of trouble if plans for a floodlit skate park are approved.

An application has been submitted to Blackburn with Darwen Council to refurbish the run-down existing play area and ball court on land off Olive Lane. There would also be a teenagers' shelter, landscaping and new children's play equipment.

Ward councillor Roy Davies believes there is a need for some kind of play provision which can be used by children and young people of all ages.

He said: "I am hoping if it gets the go-ahead it will be used by everyone. Hopefully it will attract the children from St James estate and other nearby areas who will be able to get on together.

"I would think it would be well used and would cut down on vandalism and unruly behaviour because it will give the teenagers something else to do instead of hanging about the streets. There will also be lighting on there so people will keep an eye on it.

"I think this would be a brilliant thing for this area. We had an open day in late summer where local people and children were asked for their ideas on how to improve the Olive Lane area so hopefully this will satisfy some of their wishes.

"People can still come forward if they have any other ideas for the area. This is just one part of a bigger thing. The old play equipment will be scrapped and replaced and what will be installed will cater for toddlers through to teenagers."

The plans have been submitted by the council as part of the Liveability: Neighbourhood Greens scheme covered by government funding.

The children's play area would include a four-seat swing, a see-saw, springer, spin disc, slide and climbing net.
