A PENSIONER died from multiple injuries after he was struck by a vehicle on a pelican crossing in Brierfield, police revealed today.

Officers said a white hatchback vehicle was involved in an accident with the 83-year-old man outside the Punjab Indian Takeaway, Colne Road at 7.15pm on Saturday.

Both the driver and passenger were arrested and questioned before being released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Police have today launched an appeal for witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Martin Bishop, of Colne's Road Policing Unit, said: "The elderly gentleman was trying to cross the road on a pelican crossing when he was struck by a small white hatchback vehicle.

"It left the scene and people nearby phoned for an ambulance. Very shortly afterwards the vehicle returned and the driver identified himself.

"Sadly the old man died later in Burnley General Hospital with his family present. He had suffered multiple injuries.

"All of his family members have not yet been informed so we are not in a position to be able to name the man at this moment in time."

He added: "We are appealing for anybody who may have seen the accident or anybody who has seen the white hatchback immediately before or afterwards to contact us.

"We believe that the driver may have gone as far as the roundabout on the M65 near to the Esso garage before turning round and returning to the scene."
