THE Government's Children's Minister Margaret Hodge has been told about the "stunning success" of Burnley's new Healthy Living Chai Centre in Daneshouse and Stoneyholme.

The high praise came from eminent Professor Al Aynsley-Green, the government's 'Children's Tsar', who officially opened the centre last month.

The professor was "bowled over" by what he saw and has told Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Primary Care Trust, which has prime responsibility for the centre, that he wishes the success story to be brought to the attention of the Children's Minister.

The £2.2 million premises are part of the Daneshouse and Stoneyholme Sure Start programme, designed to act as a focal point for families and community organisations in the area.

The PCT's Chief Executive, David Peat, said today: "We were delighted Professor Aynlsey-Green agreed to open the centre, but never expected the level of praise that has come from him.

"He described it as a 'stunning example of real partnership working' and told us we have created 'a superb benchmark of excellence.'

"To say everyone feels highly gratified is an understatement. All credit must to everyone involved in making this project become a vital part of community life."

Mr Peat said the Professor Aynlsey-Green was "bowled over" by what he had seen, pointing out that three years on from the troubles which afflicted the area, it now had an all-purpose centre and symbol of hope.

And he added that at the official opening, Prof Aynsley-Green enjoyed himself and took part in games with the children in the nursery section.

The centre offers a variety of activities and services including a gym, sauna and steam room, complimentary therapies, women's health, child health clinics, parent and toddler sessions, employment, training and benefits advice and a caf.
