A NELSON fire chief is warning people to take extra care over the festive period to make sure Christmas celebrations do not turn into tragedy.

Station commander Nick Isherwood of the Fire and Rescue Service in Nelson said: "We all like fairy lights, decorations and candles over Christmas - but they can all be potential fire hazards.

"However, by taking just a few simple precautions, like planning an escape route, not leaving burning candles unattended and checking the maximum amps that can be handled by the fuse in the plug, you can reduce the risks for yourself and your family.

"In particular, I'd urge everyone to ensure they have a working smoke alarm on each floor in their home."

The warning comes after figures revealed fire and rescue services in the UK attend 167 accidental house fires a day during December. During the month, such fires kill on average 44 people and injure more than 1,000.

Over the Christmas and New Year period people spend more time at home, traditionally with a lot more guests, and everyday fire risks increase.

People are more likely to be distracted and therefore vulnerable to accidental fires, the fire service warns.

Christmas trees, fairy lights, candles and drinking alcohol while cooking and smoking all pose fire risks during the festive period.
