PLANS for taxi drivers to take a college course in reading, writing and people skills will move one step closer to reality this week.
Most taxi drivers -- hackney carriage and private hire -- applying for licences in Hyndburn will be forced to go through the training.
Hyndburn Council and Accrington and Rossendale College have teamed up to offer the course, which will be tailored to individual drivers.
Drivers will either need to pass the course, 'Steering to Success' or prove they are already efficient in the areas covered.
When the course was first announced it was welcomed by Accrington Chamber of Trade and the local taxi association.
The scheme will last a maximum of 30 hours, and will be free thanks to Government funding.
Hyndburn Council's cabinet is likely to rubber-stamp the plans at a meeting on Wednesday.
