PLANS for a quarter-of-a-million-pound overhaul of Accrington's main shopping street look set to get the official green light tomorrow.
Hyndburn Council's cabinet will look at the plans, and make a final decision on whether to push ahead with the 'streetscaping' of Broadway.
The facelift scheme, first revealed by the Lancashire Evening Telegraph last month, would see the shopping street re-paved, with street furniture added. The work is set to cost in the region of £250,000.
When the scheme was revealed to the public, traders criticised the plans for failing to ensure shoppers would take advantage of both sides of the street.
But Coun Peter Britcliffe, leader of the council, is set to reveal to the cabinet on Wednesday that the design is the only one practical for the council, which will be durable and also affordable.
In a report prepared for the cabinet meeting, Hyndburn's regeneration manager, Nick Moules, says: "The streetscaping of Broadway is deemed a very high priority by the council and the Accrington Town Centre Regeneration Board, vital to the revitalisation of the town centre, necessary for attracting inward investment and creating an attractive shopping environment."
A tendering process for the work would begin in April next year with a contract starting in May or June.
