THE wheels are in motion for a day to remember when Burnley entertain Liverpool in the FA Cup third round.

Chairman Barry Kilby and chief executive Dave Edmundson have wasted no time in discussing plans for the historic cup tie following last night's draw.

The last time Burnley and Liverpool faced each other was in the 1914 final, when the Clarets won 1-0 - the last time they lifted the cup. And Kilby is hoping the historical connection, as well as the lure of a Premiership giant, will encourage supporters to swell Turf Moor for the January clash.

"I'm absolutely delighted with the tie," he said.

"With Burnley/ Liverpool, there's a sense of history about it.

"I remember ties with them over the years, and of course there's the 1914 cup final."

And Kilby hopes such nostalgia will raise a few eyebrows at Sky Sports or BBC headquarters.

"I think it will be an attractive tie so maybe there's a chance we could be on television again. Hopefully they'll remember what we did against Aston Villa in the Carling Cup," he said.

"But we'll look for a full house first.

"If the television comes into it as well, we'll get double the money, so we've got our fingers crossed for that one now."

He added: "The odds were stacked against us to get a good draw with so many sides in the hat.

"The last thing you want is to be drawn against a side in your own division or one where you have to travel a long distance.

"Another trip to Plymouth, for example, wouldn't have been ideal.

"So if Liverpool at home had been offered to us at the start of the draw I would have taken that.

"We won't be favourites, but being at home gives us a chance, especially if we can get a full squad."

Kilby is hopeful Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez will field a star-studded side.

And he is confident Clarets boss Steve Cotterill will be looking forward to the game.

"He likes to pit his wits against Premier League teams," he said.

Meanwhile, chief executive Edmundson was today locked in meetings to discuss plans for the New Year FA Cup showdown with Liverpool.

"It's a big club coming to Burnley and the renewal of old traditions," he said.

"We're absolutely delighted because a tie like this makes a fantastic difference.

"It means we know we will get a very, very good crowd on that day and to start the New Year with the prospect of an FA Cup tie against a side like Liverpool is incredible.

"You know Liverrpol will bring a big following and hopefully our supporters will come along in their thousands.

"And we've also got our fingers crossed that the television cameras will come down.

"It's a major Premiership club being drawn away so there's a chance of an upset, and that's what they'll be looking for.

"But, whatever happens, I'm sure there will be a fantastic atmosphere and we will make it very hard for Liverpool."

Items on the agenda for todays meetings included increased sponsorship packages and the prospect of erecting marquees outside the ground to add to the carnival atmosphere.

Sky Sports were expected to announce their FA Cup third round televised fixtures by tomorrow afternoon.
