POLICE across the county will be stepping up patrols this month as the busy Christmas period gets into full swing.
With shoppers carrying extra cash they can be targets for pickpockets and muggers while homes stocked with presents can be a magnet for burglars.
Detective Chief Superintendent Stuart Kirby said: "Christmas is obviously a time for people to enjoy themselves, and we very much hope they can do so safely. However, we recognise that criminals don't take a holiday at this time of year and we want to remind people of some simple steps they can take to ensure they don't become a victim of crime at this special time.
"Clearly, we will play our part by stepping up patrols, particularly in busy town centres, and by targeting those we believe might be planning to commit crime. But the public can also help themselves by taking some simple precautions.
"When you are out shopping, keep money close to your body. Don't carry too much cash and be careful when taking cash out of ATMs. If you have to leave shopping in your car, lock it out of sight.
"At home, don't leave presents on display under Christmas trees if they can be clearly seen by would-be burglars. Try to use lights on timers and remember to use locks and alarms whenever you go out."
