ACCIDENT investigators are to look at possible safety measures on a road where three Blackburn men died in a car crash.

Police today revealed that highways bosses would analyse previous accidents on the road and look to see if improvements could be made.

However they are still trying to discover what happened in the seconds leading up to the smash that claimed the lives of the three men. They were travelling in a Honda Legend when it careered off the road on the A59 at Samlesbury last Wednesday.

Driver Shakil Mohammed Ahmed, 27, of Tenby Close, and passengers Makhdoom Ali, 21, and Shamsuddin Desai, 18, both of Whitewell Place, died. A fourth man, Urphan Patel, 23, of Mandela Court, is still seriously ill in Royal Preston Hospital.

Sgt Dave Tonge, who is leading a team of officers investigating the crash, said: "When we've finished our investigations we will pass on our findings to the coroner and the highways authority, in this case Lancashire County Council.

"They will investigate whether any improvements can be made to that stretch of road and look at any previous crashes or incidents in that area."

Police are also eager to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the car leading up to the accident. Officers said the woman driver of a Landrover Defender who they wanted the speak to came forward following an appeal for witnesses last week, but she could shed no light on the incident.

Sgt Tonge added: "It is pivotal that we speak to witnesses."
