THE future of Blackburn's rambling magistrates court building and empty police station is vitally important to the centre of the town.
And as it remained on the market unsold, the future looked gloomy for a cash-strapped council which would otherwise be expected to find the funds to rejuvenate such a large and prominent chunk of stone.
As a grade ll listed building it cannot simply be knocked down but needs thoughtful, sympathetic conversion to keep that area of town vibrant.
That's why it's good to hear the building has been bought by Rossendale-based developers the Hurstwood Group who have a track record of successfully carrying out just that kind of work.
Regeneration director Graham Burgess says the council is genuinely happy about the deal because of who the purchaser is, the fact that the investment is a sign of faith in the town and because it means the council can now spend money on other areas of regeneration.
Although offices would generate jobs and luxury apartments would add a new dimension to town-centre living, there is a desperate need for a centrally-placed, high quality hotel.
Whatever project takes place will be watched with great interest.
