PUPILS are tucking into healthier dinners with the choice of traditional winter warmers like shepherd's pie, lobby, pasta dishes, curries, fish and plenty of vegetarian options like vegetable quiche.
More fruit and vegetables have been introduced into menus with some schools offering an additional 'Grab-a-Bag' healthy option, with tortilla wraps sitting alongside more traditional fare like sandwiches and jacket potatoes.
It's all part of an effort to reduce saturated fats and salt in children's diets, and curb the use of 'e's and food colourings as part of a national drive to improve children's health.
Geoff Long from Metropolitan Catering, Wigan borough's catering contractor said: "We are acutely aware of the role we can play in improving our children's health.
"We have been looking at food specifications and liasing with suppliers to offer children healthier alternatives. The result is a more wide-ranging, tasty and, hopefully, more popular menu."
