WATER watchdog Ofwat has announced the River Irwell in Bury is to undergo a series of major improvements to its sewers to improve water quality and protect the fish population.
Ofwat's final investment settlement, which was announced last week, outlined its decision to allocate £2.5billion to the United Utilities investment programme in the north west between 2005 to 2010.
However, the settlement was criticised by the Environment Agency, who claimed that more than 40 per cent of the agency's planned schemes to improve water quality have been axed.
