AS a parent of a child who has attended the Re:d Centre, I was extremely upset to hear that Bury Council is to cut funding by 50 per cent.
Children with disabilities have so few opportunities to socialise outside of their families. This is the only place outside school where my son has been able to mix with other young people in a safe, happy environment. Admittedly, two hours, once a fortnight during the school term is not a huge amount of time, but we have nevertheless appreciated this service very much.
Having a child with disabilities is isolating for the whole family. The Re:d Centre offers support, advice and practical help to so many people and at no great cost.
The cost of offering less support may prove more expensive in the long run as more parents find themselves unable to cope.
