A driver has been jailed for a total of six months after he reversed into two cars on a supermarket car park and drove off in a rage.
Sam Thomas (23), of Hulme Street, Bury, admitted driving without due care, failing to stop after or to report an accident, driving without insurance or a licence, failing to answer bail and two breaches of community orders, before a district judge sitting at Bury Magistrates Court.
Thomas was said to owe nearly £2,000 in fines, which the judge described as "culpable negligence", and the jail sentence included 28 days for non payment.
Mrs Marion Nolan, prosecuting, said Thomas had been involved in an altercation with a woman in the Tesco store at Woodfield retail park in Bury, had "stormed out" of the supermarket, got into his vehicle. He reversed into two other parked cars, one with an occupant inside. A total of £550 damage was caused but Thomas did not stop, and he drove off towards Peel Way. A witness who knew him gave the police details. Probation reports spoke of Thomas committing offences in anger on the spur of the moment.
Defending solicitor Miss Lucy Ashton said Thomas had been in some rage when he got into his car following the altercation inside the store, collided with two parked cars and drove off. Thomas made no excuses. The former demolition worker had obtained the car to do it up and make some money.
