A FORMER Blackpool library, controversially closed earlier this year, is to be resurrected as a community centre.
Highfield Library shut its doors for the final time in September as part of the resort's library modernisation programme.
But the building will now be used by the South Shore Community Association, while Blackpool's Early Years and Childcare team (EYC) will use the site as a training facility for local carers.
The centre will be used for events such as neighbourhood watch meetings, while rooms will also be set up for childcare education.
The EYC and the community association will help to fund the work, along with cash from the Single Regeneration Budget.
Cllr Ivan Taylor, Blackpool's portfolio holder for community services, said: "The Council was determined that this building would continue to provide the local community with a facility that they can use and enjoy.
"Claremont Park Community Centre also grew from a redundant library and is now much used and appreciated by local people.
"I am delighted that not only will Highfield now have a vibrant community centre but that Blackpool's dedicated child care professionals will also have the benefit of an invaluable resource."
Work on transforming the former library will begin in the New Year and is expected to be completed in May. Anyone interested in making use of the centre can contact Jeff Walker of the community association on 01253 345426. Any child care professional who feels they can benefit from using the centre's facilities can call the EYC on 01253 476632.
