HIGHWAYS chiefs are planning moves to stop selfish car parking in Crawshawbooth.

Lancashire County Council wants to create an off-street car park off Burnley Road and adjacent to Crawshawbooth Primary School.

And officers say the work will give them the chance to make improvements to Burnley Road at the same time.

Now highways chiefs are looking to consult local residents about the proposal in the New Year.

And if residents agree with the ideas suggested by the county council - which owns the land that would be turned into a car park - this would allow the authority to go ahead with measures to reduce accidents.

Sections of Burnley Road have been identified as accident blackspots. And a group set up to identify contributing factors believes cars have been parked in places along the road which increase danger to road users.

So by making a car park for local residents, highways bosses believe they will be able to stop people parking at critical locations.

They also plan to widen the footpath and bring in traffic regulation orders to help enforce against parking which contributes to road danger.

Lancashire County Council's Peter Andrews said: "The county council's head of property is currently looking at costs associated with the provision of the joint use car park."
